The Northern Cemetery in Bonn (Nordfriedhof) was, until the reunification of Germany, the central site for the commemoration of victims of both World War I and World War II. The site is the final resting place for approximately 2,000 persons, including soldiers, prisoners of war, forced labourers and victims of bombardments.
The main part of this memorial is an eight-metre-tall stone that bears a plaque with the following inscription: ‘In memory of victims of wars and violence’ (Den Opfern der Kriege und der Gewaltherrschaft). This is the place where all the official ceremonies are held.
On the right, there is the burial site that holds the graves of Polish citizens. The sandstone headstones bear the names of several dozen victims from Poland - prisoners, prisoners of war, forced labourers and Polish children. The query conducted in 2022, made it possible to establish the names of more than 60 victims from Poland.
The burial site is well preserved, but the state of preservation of the headstones is mediocre (2018).
