In the part of the municipal Städtischer cemetery (Städtischer Friedhof) called the ‘New Cemetery’ (‘Neuer Friedhof’), in burial section No. 5a, there are the graves of foreign victims of World War II. The southern part of this extensive grass-grown section is marked by several dozen granite grave plaques bearing the names of the victims - mostly from Poland and the USSR.
The archival documents have made it possible to establish the number of the Polish citizens buried in this cemetery to be larger than that of the gravestones.
The state of preservation of the gravestones is good. Some of them, however, are not too legible on account of the type of Gothic script used, the so-called ‘Schwabach’ script, in which the first and last names as well as the country of origin of the victims are engraved upon the gravestones.
