The military cemetery in Obermeitingen-Schwabstadl, located not far from the former Lecgfeld airport, comes from the French-Prussian War of 1870-1871.
The site is the final resting place for 2,025 victims of the French-Prussian War, World War I and World War II. The deceased are soldiers, prisoners of war and civilian war victims.
The burial section for victims of both World Wars was established in its present-day form between 1949-1951. It is located in the central part of the cemetery and fenced off with a low stone wall. The wall bears metal plaques with the names of the victims and a memorial plaque with the following inscription: ‘In this cemetery lie 250 Russians, 75 Serbs, 36 Romanians and one victim of an unknown nationality from World War I between 1914-18, as well as 77 Yugoslavs, 39 Poles, 7 Greeks, 5 Romanians, 1 Spaniard, 1 citizen of the USSR, 1 Czech and 5 deceased of an unknown nationality from World War II between 1939-45. Let their common fate in the grave give rise to a new Europe of peace and freedom.’
The query conducted in 2022 in the cemetery confirmed the graves of approximately 60 victims of Polish origin. These are soldiers, prisoners of war and civilian forced labourers who died during or just after the war.
