The municipal cemetery in Lauta holds two burial sites for the victims of World War II - forced labourers. One contains the graves of individuals from the Soviet Union, while the central part of the cemetery holds another burial site for forced labourers from Poland, France, Belgium and the Netherlands. Among these, 38 Polish victims are buried here. The site is marked by a monument that bears the following memorial inscription: ‘Their death is a warning to us! Here lie Poles, Jews, French, Belgians and one Dutch citizen - people who were deported from their homelands as slaves and murdered.’
During the war, the majority of the deceased worked in the Vereinigte Aluminium-Werke AG (VAW) aluminium smelter that employed more than 5,000 workers.
