The St. Georgen Evangelical cemetery, established in 1944, has one section devoted to housing the remains of victims of World War II. More than 600 German war victims - soldiers who died in the local lazarets (field hospitals) and civilian victims of air raids of the city in 1945 found their final resting place here. Since 1951, the German War Graves Commission (Volksbund), has extended this section and moved here the victims’ remains from their temporary graves found in the local counties, including those of foreign victims, forced labourers above all. The majority of the 99 foreigners resting here are Polish citizens. Additionally, the graves of citizens of the USSR and Czechoslovakia can also be found (rows Nos. 39 and 40). The entrance to this burial section is marked by a canopied monument in the form of a metal book that bears the victims’ names.
