Cemetery description

In the Neuer Friedhof cemetery in Greifswald, there are several war grave sites. Burial section No. 41 in the western part of the cemetery is a place where victims of World War II are commemorated. The site is called the ‘Honorary Graves of Those Persecuted by the Nazi Regime’ (‘Ehrenhain für Verfolgte des Naziregimes’). The main part of this memorial is a red brick wall with an inscription saying: ‘May the fighters against fascism and war be remembered’ (Ehrendes Gedenken den Kämpfern gegen Faschismus und Krieg), and with the emblem of the International Federation of the Resistance Fighters (FIR). .
The site is the resting place for anti-Fascists, members of the resistance movement who died after 1945, and foreign forced labourers, including Polish citizens. In 1974, at the foot of the wall, there was installed a commemorative tablet bearing an inscription saying: ‘In memory of the 172 Soviet, Polish, Yugoslavian, French, Dutch, and German prisoners of the Peenemünde concentration camp, burnt in the Greifswald crematorium’ (‘Ehrendes Gedenken den 172 sowjetischen, polnischen, jugoslawischen, französischen, holländischen und deutschen im Greifswalder Krematorium verbrannten Häftlingen des KZ Peenemünde’). There are also individual graves on the edge of this burial section. Most probably, they are the graves of German soldiers. .
Another place commemorating World War II victims can be found in the centre of the cemetery, in burial section No. 25, where stands a stone monument bearing the inscription: ‘Here lie victims of the World Imperial War of different nations. They call to fight for peace. 1939-1945’ (Hier ruhen Opfer verschiedener Nationen des imperialistischen Weltkrieges / Sie mahnen zum Kampf für den Frieden). There is also a stone that commemorates victims from Yugoslavia, and two rows of gravestones. .
Between 2017 and 2019, the commemorative tablets were redesigned and some personal data of the victims were added. However, these do not contain the biographies of the Polish citizens. In the Neuer Friedhof cemetery, two Soviet war graves can be found - one in burial section No. 6 in the eastern part of the cemetery, and the other is between sections Nos. 29 and 39 in the southern part. Soldiers whose names are unknown are buried here. .
In the north-eastern part of the cemetery (to the right of burial section No. 18), there is a monument commemorating the victims of World War I.
