Waldfriedhof

Cemetery description

According to the estimates by the German War Graves Commission (Volksbund Deutsche Kriegsgräberfürsorge), the Forest Cemetery in Duisburg (Waldfriedhof) contains the last remains of over 3,500 war victims. More than 700 foreign citizens are buried here, mostly from the USSR (approx. 550) and Poland (144). The graves of forced labourers - women, men and children, prisoners, and prisoners of war are located in the southern part of the cemetery on the side of Wedauer Street. The Polish war graves can mostly be found in the burial section for victims of bombings and German victims, and in the burial sites for foreign victims - forced labourers, prisoners and prisoners of war. A large number of the deceased are buried anonymously in mass graves. So far, 57 names have been identified among the 144 Polish citizens buried here.
The state of preservation of some of the burial sites - the graves and memorials, is good. Some of them, however, give the impression of being neglected.
