The War Cemetery in Kiel, located on the edge of the Northern Kiel Cemetery, is administered by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission. Most of those buried here are pilots coming from different countries such as the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and Poland, killed in air raids carried out over northern Europe. Their remains were moved from Schleswig-Holstein, the Frisian Islands, and other parts of north-western Germany to this cemetery and buried with honours in this war cemetery. Each grave is marked by an English sandstone gravestone with, as is known, the military rank, the age, and the date of death of the person buried in it. Additionally, each gravestone has the squadron badge emblem while some other graves bear a motto chosen by family members of the deceased. In total, 983 identified and 96 unidentified persons have found their final resting place in an area of about one hectare. There are also 9 Polish war graves in the cemetery.
