Right next to the entrance to the Moringen cemetery, on the left and in front of the chapel, there is a burial site for Polish citizens, some of whom were victims of World War II. The majority, however, died after the war as a result of malnutrition, disease, hard work, their former stay in concentration camps or prisons, or in tragic accidents.
In Moringen there was a Polish camp for so-called ‘displaced persons’, located on the premises of the former concentration camp. Until 1948, approximately 1,500-2,000 Polish former forced labourers or concentration camp prisoners stayed in this displaced persons’ camp.
The Moringen cemetery has another burial site for war victims, where 55 young prisoners of the Moringen concentration camp are buried. They died as a result of overwork in the local armaments factories, malnutrition, disease, suicide or murder. It was only in 1988 that memorial plaques with the victims’ names were put up in the cemetery, though the exact number of the victims remains unknown. The latest studies have determined the number to be over 100.
