Friedhof Oeventrop

Cemetery description

The southern part of the Oeventrop cemetery, a district of the city of Arnsberg at present, houses a separate war graves cemetery devoted to victims of World War II. It is the final resting place for more than 220 persons, in the vast majority soldiers who died in the local lazaret (field hospital). The four burial sections are marked by stone crosses bearing the victims’ names. The graves of foreign citizens of the former USSR, 10 out of whom were pronounced as Poles, are located in Section No. D4. The stone crosses commemorating the victims are made of slate, which easily crumbles away and changes its colour, making the names inscribed upon them hardly legible. At the entrance to the cemetery, there is a list of those buried in this section containing the details of the location of the graves.
The state of preservation of this section is good, except for several crosses on which the victims’ names are illegible (state from Sept 2020).
