Kriegsgräberstätte Steimbke - Lichtenhorst

Cemetery description

This small war cemetery is located by the local road that leads from Heemsen to Gliten. In total, 111 victims of World War II and an unknown number of Russian prisoners of war from World War I are buried here.
Among the victims of the Second World War were more than 31 Polish male and female forced labourers as well as approximately 80 prisoners of war and forced labourers from the USSR. The central part of the cemetery is marked by a stone memorial that consists of a cross dedicated to the victims of World War I and 10 stone stelae that bear the names of the World War II victims from Poland and the USSR. Unfortunately, only some of the victims are identified.
Initially, this was a cemetery for the Lichtenboor POW camp in the First World War. In 1961, the remains of 26 Polish and 72 Soviet citizens were moved here from various burial sites scattered around the Hanover district.
