Cemetery description

The central eastern part of the municipal cemetery in Bad Münder holds a large burial site for the graves of foreign victims of World War II. Its central part is marked by a memorial plaque that bears an inscription saying: ‘In memory of those who rest here / Den hier Ruhenden Zum Gedenken.’ In the site, arranged in eight long rows, there are 126 headstones that bear the personal data of the deceased and the information about their nationality.
The largest group of those buried here are Poles - 49 persons. However, according to the available data, 51 persons of Polish origin found their final resting place here. Victims of other nationalities are also buried in this cemetery - Ukrainians (18), Latvians (11), Lithuanians (7), Yugoslavs (6), Estonians (5), Soviets (5), Italians (2) as well as 1 Belgian and 1 Greek. The majority were forced labourers who, during the war, worked in Bad Münder and its neighbourhood. As to the Polish citizens, a large group (44 persons) were those who died between 1945 and 1952 as so-called ‘displaced persons’ (DPs). The list of the dead includes 4 children. The burial site is very well maintained and the state of preservation of the memorials is also very good (2022).
