Cemetery description

According to the Bulletin of the Council for the Protection of Memory of Combat and Martyrdom (No. 1(6) 1998), the Forest Cemetery (located by the road leading to Soltau) holds 2 burial sites containing the last remains of victims of World War II. The site located in the farthest left part of the cemetery is marked by an information board that mentions 376 foreign victims - prisoners of concentration and POW camps that were located in Sandbostel and its neighbourhood, who died after the war in the hospital in Rotenburg and who were buried here. In the site, one can also find the grave of a Polish soldier of the 1 st Polish Armoured Division. The grave is marked by a small headstone placed on the ground and bearing an inscription that consists of the name of the deceased, his date of death and the information in German that says: ‘Polish soldier’ (‘Pol. Soldat’). Additionally, the cemetery holds 11 graves of Polish prisoners of war who died between May and June 1945.
