The small UNRRA/IRO (the United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation Administration/the International Refugees Organisation) Cemetery in Merxhausen, established in 2011, is the final resting place for 63 so-called ‘Displaced Persons’ (‘DPs’) - former forced labourers - mainly from Poland and the USSR. They died after World War II in the IRO-Landesheilanstalt Merxhausen hospital as a result of the repression and inhumane living conditions they suffered during the war, which led to their utter exhaustion and disease.
