Butzbach-Nieder Weisel Kriegsgräberstätte

Cemetery description

The war graves cemetery in Butzbach was established by the Americans in April 1945. This is the final resting place for 519 victims of World War II, 420 of whom are German and 99 are Polish and Soviet citizens. The majority of the deceased were soldiers that fell in battle, died of wounds in local lazarets (field hospitals) or in captivity. After the war, the remains of civilian victims of air raids and those of Polish and Soviet forced labourers were moved to this site. In 1957, the area of the Soviet war graves cemetery was joined to this cemetery, and Soviet and Polish war graves were moved here from local fields and the Friedberg district. The cemetery took on its present-day shape due to the cooperation between the German War Graves Commission (Volksbund Deutsche Kriegsgräberfüsorge e.V.), the Friedberg district and the town of Butzbach. In 2014, the cemetery underwent renovation.
