Friedhof Wasseralfingen

Cemetery description

The middle part of the municipal Wasseralfingen cemetery in Aalen contains a large burial section holding the graves of Polish citizens buried here during World War II.
It is the final resting place for at least 66 persons (identified), including 33 prisoners, forced labourers and their children. The prisoners were victims of the Wiesendorf concentration camp that was a branch of the Natzweiler concentration camp. Almost all of them had been deported, during the Warsaw Uprising, from Warsaw to the camp at the time when the living and working conditions, poor quality food, and constant persecution led to an extremely high mortality rate.
The place is called the ‘Polish Cemetery’ and is marked by 24 wooden crosses, a brass memorial plaque, and a stone monument commemorating the victims. Two plaques, which are part of the monument, have the victims’ names inscribed upon them. The monument was erected in the years following World War II through the initiative of a group of Poles who had settled in the surrounding area after the war.
