Cemetery description

The Friedhof In den Kisseln cemetery contains 5,899 single graves of individuals who died in World Wars I and II. The graves of World War II victims, including Polish citizens, are located in several burial sections, among them:
- Section No. 105 mostly containing graves of foreign citizens deported to Berlin as forced labourers. By and large, these were Belgian, Dutch, Yugoslavian, Italian or Czech citizens, the vast majority of whom were killed in the years 1943 and 1944, and during the battles in the area in 1945.
- Section No. 143 holds the graves mostly of Polish and Soviet citizens. There are also the graves of German citizens - refugees and those expelled from the territories adjoined to Poland after the war, who died before May 1946 in the camps located in the Spandau area.
It is also possible that there are Polish graves in section No. IV with the remains of unknown victims, mostly civilians, who died in air raids in November 1943 in the Charlottenburg district, in Tiergarten in January 1944, and during the battles in Spandau between April and May 1945.
In total, 75 identified and an unknown number of unidentified Polish citizens are buried in the cemetery. Some of their graves have small concrete plaques with the victims’ names, but there is no information as to their places of origin or their later fate. Additionally, to the left of the driveway there are graves of those who were considered as sub-humans or enemies by the Nazi ideology or those who were pronounced as enemies of the Third Reich for some other reasons.
The area of these burial sections is well maintained, though the victims’ names are frequently misspelt.
