Johannisfriedhof

Cemetery description

St John’s Cemetery is located in the area of the former Freital industrial centre on the edge of the city of Dresden. In 1949, the remains of 315 forced labourers were interred here. Most of the forced labourers worked in the Döhlen foundry of the Flick concern.
One of the burial sites for forced labourers is located along the northern and western borders of the cemetery. After the year 2000, the single grave markers were replaced by 7 stone stelae with the names of the deceased inscribed upon them (in total, 168 persons).
On the other side of the path running in the north-western part of the cemetery, one can find a mass grave containing the remains of other forced labourers. The site is marked by a small sandstone monument that bears the following memorial text: ‘Here lie Lithuanian, Polish, Czechoslovakian, Hungarian citizens. 1940-1945’.
The names of 8 Polish citizens that rest in this mass grave have been identified.
