Ehrenfriedhof

Cemetery description

The former Western Cemetery in Burg is located in Kirchhof Street and holds two burial sites for the victims of World War II.
One of them is an honorary cemetery established in the 1970s for 369 Soviet citizens that at that time were buried in the then Western Cemetery. The deceased were soldiers who fell in this area in spring 1945, as well as forced labourers and prisoners of war. Those who died after the liberation in 1945 are also buried here. The cemetery is marked by a sandstone monument in the shape of a wall as well as by a centrally placed Soviet tank - the symbol of victory. The names and the dates of the victims’ birth and death are inscribed in Cyrillic on the wall. The monument also bears a memorial text that reads as follows: ‘In eternal memory of the Soviet heroes’ (Ewiges Gedenken den sowjetischen Helden). In 2018, this cemetery and the German Military Cemetery were renovated. During the renovation, the personal data of those buried here were complemented and, as a result, 539 identified and 13 unidentified Soviet citizens were commemorated.
A bit further to the west and on the left side, there is the German Military Cemetery that mainly holds the graves of German war victims and war victims of other nationalities. The individual graves are marked by black headstones that bear the personal data of the deceased. Among these, several Polish names can be found. These were the victims of escape attempts, expulsions and deportations, and are commemorated by means of bronze plaques placed along a path that inform visitors about the history of this place.
